Kaye Khaos Explains His In-Dash Nexus 7 Setup

Kaye Khaos recently released a video of how he installed his Nexus 7 into the dash of his 2003 Chevy Silverado.

In the video after the jump he explains how he integrated the tablet into the vehicle without any modifications to the dash itself, but with some modest techniques to make this flawless clash happen.

This written companion to the video will highlight some areas that are in the video, and some that aren't. Don't forget to read the information below the video.

Video Notes:
  • The setup displayed in the video is for GM dash types of the Silverado/Sierra/Yukon/Suburban and etc. during the year of 03 to 06. Any other dash types may require modification.
  •  Output from the Nexus 7 Tablet can be outputted through the 3.5mm head jack by using a 3.5mm to RCA cable, or by using the Bluetooth feature of the tablet to a Bluetooth head unit, or amplifier.  When using the 3.5mm to RCA method. An external amplifier will be needed for your interior speakers, and subwoofer. An graphic equalizer is fitting for this method. As the Nexus 7 tablet will not separate the frequencies of low, mid, and high. Meaning there would be mid range in your woofers, and low range in your highs. The graphic equalizer separates these frequencies while helping boost low voltage of the original output from the Nexus 7 tablet. As for the Bluetooth head unit method. It makes it easier on those who don't want a external amplifier on their interior speakers. As a aftermarket head unit with the Bluetooth feature will integrate seamless into the stock system with the adapter harness. And, do the same job of separating frequencies as most aftermarket head units have an built in graphic equalizer.
  •  Power to the Nexus 7 can be distributed many ways through the micro USB connector. As said in the setup displayed in the video. A hardwired charger can be purchased, and wired into the ACC of the vehicle. So, that the tablet would become active when the key turns as it was part of the vehicle. Or, using a head unit that has an USB adapter on it, and using the USB cord that comes with the tablet can provide the same power integration as the hardwired charger. When the key is turned, and power is distributed through the vehicle. Both the head unit, and the Tablet will react as intended.
  • The STAY AWAKE feature is found on any Andriod device on firmware Android 4.4.4 to Android 4.0. And, can be activated by going to SETTINGS, ABOUT TABLET/PHONE, and tap BUILD NUMBER until notified that you have unlocked developer options. Go back into settings, and now you have the option DEVELOPER OPTIONS. In DEVELOPER OPTIONS you will find the STAY AWAKE feature. Check that on, and any time the device is being charge the screen will never go off, and once the device is "disconnected" from charge the screen timeout will start, and the device will go into standby.
